The Early Years
Marc Valentin was born in Algeria in 1934. Since childhood Marc sought to find solace as much in his studies as in sports. In particular, he worked hard at soccer, track and field, volleyball, and tennis, activities he practiced during his spare time. As a young man he graduated from college with a degree in physical education and taught in that area for several years.

Marc was also noted for his great artistic sensibility and talents. He practiced in several mediums such as oil, watercolors, ink, clay, and wood carving. In addition, he played the violin and sang in the school choir.

World Champion
His life changed for ever after discovering spear fishing. In a relatively short time, he was able to achieve very strong results. Very quickly he found himself ranked as a top candidate in France’s national team, competing in that country’s nationals. He became a formal team member, representing France victoriously in several world championships, and reached his crowning achievement in the world championship in Ilo, Peru, in 1975, when he won the individual world championship.

Master Designer
One of his grandest dreams was to revolutionize the arbalette, (commonly known in the US as the euro-gun). After much reflection, trials, and attempts with new materials, Marc begun to make progress in his quest. He was careful in his studies of gun and projectile dynamics, the effects of the salt water medium, fish behavior, currents, etc.

His research took him to New Caledonia, French Oceania, in search of sunny and adequate testing grounds for his prototypes. There he found challenging conditions: rough seas, strong winds, sharks, and large prey offered a rigorous and challenging testing field.

Before leaving Algeria, he had spent many vacations in the southern coast of Spain, in Alicante. In the City of Denia, he found an attractive location from where he could launch interesting fishing adventures involving large grouper and other prized species. Upon his return to Europe, he decided to establish his home-base in Denia. Here he opened a shop from where to market his equipment as he continued to patent his new inventions.

The Spear Gun
In 1984, Marc officially patented the “perfected gun for underwater spear fishing.” This was the name given to his #5 gun by the Spanish Ministry for Industry and Energy because it represented simple but functional solutions that improved the spear gun as known at the time.

Marc had achieved his dream of revolutionizing the spear gun. The #5 undoubtedly represented enhancements never seen before like the use of modern materials, the 28mm barrel, the low profile muzzle, the ambidextrous line release, the first ergonomic handle, and the cassette mechanism—so simple and precise. These improvements were copied by most of the large spear gun manufacturers around the world, and today all European-style guns and many American guns carry the cassette mechanism inserted into similar ergonomic handles.

Perhaps the most subtle but notable feature of the #5 was the mating system of the components. Through a mechanism of integrated nipples and couplings, Marc had achieved a system that was “whole” insofar as the result was completely watertight and contained no play or fragmentation between parts. It was the first time that the spear gun had been assembled as a whole system based on synergies, and not as a set of loose adaptations of separate parts lacking in accuracy.

Epilogue
Those who were part of his life remember how Marc always shared his passion and his knowledge. He was generous with advice and never kept his fishing spots a secret. His talks about spear fishing, in his shop in Denia, were memorable. Marc Valentin died suddenly in January of 2002 in Denia, Spain. After 20 years, the #5 still holds a leading, iconic place as a classic European-style gun, unsurpassed in the field and in its historic place in the development of the spear gun.

Años Formativos
Nace en Thiersville, Argelia en 1934. Desde niño, Marc buscó refugio en los estudios y el deporte, cultivando el fútbol, atletismo, voleibol y tenis, los cuales practicaba durante su tiempo libre. De joven, persigue con éxito estudios universitarios en educación física, y ejerce como profesor durante varios años.

Marc poseía también notable talento artístico y desde niño mostró gran sensibilidad. Pintaba al óleo y acuarela, dibujaba con tinta china, trabajaba con arcilla y esculpía en madera; además de tocar violín y de cantar a coro.

Campeón del Mundo
Cambia su vida por completo con el descubrimiento de la caza submarina. En poco tiempo, gracias a su enorme capacidad física y a su conocimiento del mar, logró alcanzar excelentes resultados. Sus esfuerzos lo llevaron casi vertiginosamente a la primera categoría en el equipo de Francia y prontamente a campeonatos nacionales. Como miembro del equipo Francés se destaca en varios campeonatos mundiales. Finalmente se corona campeón del mundo en la categoría individual en el mundial de 1975 en Ilo, Perú.

Maestro Diseñador
Uno de sus mayores sueños era desarrollar un fusil muy especial. A fuerza de muchas reflexiones, ensayos y pruebas con materiales, Marc logra progresos en sus minuciosos estudios sobre la dinámica del disparo, las reacciones de los peces, las corrientes y los efectos del agua sobre el fusil y el proyectil.

Sus estudios lo llevan a buscar el sol y condiciones adecuadas para probar su material y por tres años radica en Nueva Caledonia, Oceanía Francesa. Allí enfrenta sus prototipos con condiciones muy difíciles. La mar agitada, vientos fuertes, tiburones y el gran tamaño de las presas le ofrecieron un campo de pruebas riguroso.

En sus años de Argelia venia a menudo a pescar a España. En Denia, Alicante, encontró un buen sitio donde podía cobrar grandes meros y hacer muy bonitas pescas. Al regresar a Europa, decide hacer su hogar en Denia, donde también monta una empresa para comercializar sus ideas. En el ano 1981 dejó de competir para dedicarse por completo a su negocio y a patentar sus invenciones.

El Fusil
En 1984 nace oficialmente el “fusil de pesca submarina perfeccionado,” nombre con el cual el fusil #5 es inscrito en la patente del Ministerio de Industria y Energía de España, por el hecho de representar soluciones simples pero funcionales que perfeccionan este implemento de pesca.

Marc había logrado su sueño dorado de revolucionar el fusil de pesca. El fusil #5 sin duda representaba avances no vistos hasta entonces, como fueron el uso de plasticos modernos, el caño de 28mm, el cabezal reducido, el sujetador de línea ambidextro, una culata muy bien estudiada (la primera culata ergonómica) y el mecanismo de cajetín—tan sensible y preciso—avances que fueron copiados por todas las grandes marcas al punto que ahora todo los fusiles de tipo Europeo llevan este cajetín montado en pistolines similares, con algunas modificaciones individuales.

Quizás lo más sutil pero a la vez notable del fusil #5 fue la mecánica de acoplamiento de todos sus componentes, logrando por medio de un diseño innovador de muñones una precisión de acoplamiento nunca alcanzada hasta entonces para el más completo hermetismo. La redacción de patente lee así: “a lo largo de la descripción se ha mostrado que con elementos tan sencillos, pero dispuestos de forma perfectamente estudiada, se consiguen unos buenos resultados de acoplamiento hermético y estanco” Era la primera vez que el fusil de caza submarina había sido ensamblado sinérgicamente como un sistema único y no como una adaptación poco elegante de partes separadas y poco precisas.

Epílogo
Aquellos que fueron parte de su vida recordaran como Marc siempre compartió su pasión y su conocimiento. Era generoso con sus consejos y no guardaba secretos sobre los sitios de pesca. Las charlas sobre la caza submarina que se daban en la tienda de Denia eran memorables. Marc Valentín fallece repentinamente en Enero de 2002 en Denia. Luego de 20 años el fusil #5 guarda su lugar como un fusil Europeo clasico, insuperado en el campo y en su lugar historico en el desarrollo del arbalete.
